How Much Do You Know About Cakes?
Everyone has had cake before, it might have been at a wedding or at a birthday party, you might have even had one just for the cravings, but we’ve all had cake at some point. Over the years, so many different types of cake have been created, I’ve even seen cakes I didn’t even know existed. Nowadays there are even customized cake shops in Dubai as well as in other parts of the world.
I'm sure we’re all familiar with the regular, everyday cakes we find around the cake shops in Dubai, from chocolate cakes to fruit cakes, even gelatin cakes. But how much do you really know about cakes besides how they are made and how they taste?
Here are some facts about cakes that I learned about from an online cake shop in Dubai:
The Most Popular Cake Flavor
As you might have guessed, chocolate is the most popular flavor for birthday cakes as well as many different types of cakes such as your favorite cupcakes in Dubai, this is followed by vanilla-flavored cakes. German chocolate cake is a famous dessert, it was actually named after Samuel German, an American who created a type of dark-baking chocolate in 1852. “I know, you probably thought I meant Germany – the country”. The chocolate was used in a recipe that was published in 1957 as "German's Chocolate Cake," which is how it got its name.
The History Of The Birthday Cake
Birthday cakes became a more common celebratory feature by the 17th century and looked quite similar to the ones we eat today. However, they were creations of luxury that only those of high status could afford due to the high cost of ingredients like sugar. This all changed in the 18th century when the price of ingredients dropped, making birthday cakes more accessible to a wider audience.
The Earliest Form Of Cake
The first cakes were actually flat and quite boring as compared to modern cakes, they were basically compact discs of grain that were dried and pressed together. It wasn't until the early 18th century that cakes began to resemble the ones we eat today, as prior to that they were made with yeast and were more similar to bread.
The First Multi-Tiered Wedding Cake
The first multi-tiered wedding cake was created in 1858 for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, also named Victoria. Queen Victoria's own wedding cake was a single tier that measured three yards wide and weighed 300 pounds (talk about a baking marvel). Queen Victoria was also the first to ever use pure white icing sugar on a wedding cake, which is why it is known as royal icing even to date.
Origin Of The Christmas Cake
Christmas cakes are a relatively modern addition to the holiday. It replaced the "Twelfth Cake," which was traditionally eaten at the feast of Epiphany to mark the end of the Christmas season, in the late 19th century.
The World Record For The Most Candles On Any Cake
Ashrita Furman and the Sri Chinmoy Centre in New York lit 72,585 candles on a cake to celebrate the 85th birthday of meditation teacher Sri Chinmoy, setting the first-ever world record for the most candles on a birthday cake. This record was set back in 2016.
The History Of Fruit Cake
Fruit cake is known for its rich flavor, which becomes more pronounced the older the cake is. Here’s a fun fact, fruit cake was originally eaten by roman crusaders to help keep them full, and full of energy. It was later adapted to include fruits soaked in brandy or rum which would preserve them longer. Fruit cake is also a traditional choice for wedding cakes because it can last without refrigeration. In the past, girls would place a piece of fruit cake under their pillow at night to dream of the person to whom they would be married.
Final Note:
I hope that, just as I did, you too have learned something new today! Who would have ever thought that something as common as cake could have undergone such changes and have so much history? How many of you single ladies will start stealing a piece of fruit cake to dream of your future husband? If this is an experiment you’re looking to try, or perhaps just like me, are now craving a piece of cake, my recommendation would be Papillion cakes Dubai. And if you have a celebration coming up as well, you’re in luck too as they make some of the best celebration cakes in Dubai!
